'Fruity Jelly' Does a Faceplant Due to Poor Controls

Fruity Jelly developed Scorsoft and published Bulkypix is focused on Jelly, a little colored jelly on a mission to rebuild his village after a savage attack by an evil and spiky foe. With fruit syrup and a bit of magic, Jelly can create more friends but first he needs to collect fruit. Along the way Jelly befriends a flower named Florabelle to guide him on his travels. Fruity Jelly is a puzzle game that relies on the tilt system of your iDevice to navigate through mazes. The game features 45 levels and storybook graphics along with challenging maps. The tutorial is multipart with Florabelle posing as your teacher on how the game controls and features work.

There are two modes of movement: (a)’touch control’, the tilt system to move left and right or (b) ‘accelerometer’, a accelerator joystick. The rotation buttons provide 360 degree movement needed to fill Jelly’s belly with every piece of fruit in the maze. Double finger tapping will enter into free movement and allow the camera to move around the map to plan your next move. Double tap again to exit the mode and snap the camera back to Jelly. Other in-game tools include the fruit counter showing how many pieces of food are left in the puzzle and Florabelle who will open the main menu options.

In higher levels timing and precise movement are key to avoiding death by spikes and smashing blocks. The touch control mode is oversensitive, making you spend more time and focus on getting the right angle for tilting than where you’re going on the map. This results in multiple tries to solve each puzzle and a lot of retracing steps. The accelerometer mode allows for smoother movement, but still feels jerky lacking the accuracy needed to move around the maze quickly. Fruity Jelly has a cute exterior but charming graphics won’t save this game from being smashed by poor game mechanics.
