'The Font Game' Educates The Masses On the Wide World of Typography

[Editor's Note: Its only fitting the first review we are publishing after Steve Jobs' death yesterday is about fonts. If you've watched the video of Steve Jobs' commencement speech at Stanford in 2005 (see it here), you know he credited a calligraphy class at Reed College with shaping his vision for the beautiful array of font typefaces in the Macintosh.]  If you spend all day staring at a computer screen, you might think you know a thing or two about font. But how much do you know, really? Sure, you’re aware that the use of Comic Sans in a professional setting is practically grounds for termination. You know that Times New Roman is the preferred font of staunch English professors the world over. You may even be able to identify a few of those bizarre-looking Wingdings. But that’s just the tip of the typographical iceberg. As an art, typography has been around since the ancient Greeks were waxing philosophic. Popular blog “I Love Typography” aims to educate the masses on the complex world of typeface with its new app The Font Game.

There are two game-play options. The main “Font Game” is a series of multiple-choice questions that test your knowledge on font types. With a database of over 1,000 fonts, only the most dedicated font enthusiasts will be able to snag a high score without a bit of practice. An example of the font will appear at the top of the screen, followed by four possible answer choices. Is it Courier or Century Gothic, Graphite Light or Tekton Bold? The more often you play, the more familiar you’ll become with the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between typefaces. “The Terminology Game” tests your knowledge on typography lingo. Like the “Font Game” you will be given four possible answer choices. Your definition will be a visual depiction of the terminology you need to identify. Common-knowledge terms like “asterisk” and “comma” will be in the mix, but so will some vocabulary-boosting whoppers like “transitive serif” and “beak terminal”.

You can save your favorite fonts for later review in the “My Favorites” section. Scores can be shared online and record-breakers are tracked in the “Hall of Fame” (which can be accessed via your home screen.) The Font Game does something that more apps should do: allow users to walk away with a bit of knowledge. This is a simple, must-have app for anyone with an interest in typography, publishing, or design.
