'Cubes vs. Spheres' Needs To Shape Up

'Cubes vs. Spheres' Needs To Shape Up

Cubes vs. Spheres is simple: flick balls at an army of oncoming red cubes to destroy them before they flop into your vulnerable area. You have to start on “easy” mode when beginning, and have the option of going through a helpful tutorial to hammer out the controls and objectives of the game. Although some may find the game’s simple controls and throwback 3D graphics alluring, the clunky interface and mindless flicking of blue balls caused me to lose interest after about 5 minutes. You have to manually reload every ball in order to flick it at the oncoming cubes, so missed finger taps can result in injury and frustration. Cubes are coming at you from a 180 degree field so you must constantly be aware of threats from the left and the right. Luckily there is an infinite supply of balls to begin with and more advanced weapons can be acquired with more play (if you manage to make it that far).

While the developers have done a good job of making a game featuring evil geometric shapes and their destruction by other geometric shapes, the mechanics of playing the game feel like it was made for robots to play rather than humans. Cubes vs. Spheres is a game unlike any other, but where it excels in originality it falters in user engagement and overall interest to keep playing. For now, I’ll let the evil red cubes win.
