'Another World - 20th Anniversary' is Out of This World (Get It?)

Reviews

'Another World - 20th Anniversary' is Out of This World (Get It?) Another World - 20th Anniversary (the original game was also known as Out of This World) by Bulkypix is not just another app game, it’s a piece of history brought from Amiga console to iDevices. Originally developed by Eric Chahi in 1991 as a cinematic platformer, Another World made its mark through a unique method of cut scenes to tell the story of Lester Knight Chaykin, physicist and adventurer extraordinaire. Though much time has passed since its inception, Another World handles well in its 20th Anniversary release.

The plot is based on an experiment gone wrong due to a lightning storm and a particle accelerator sending poor Lester into another world where anything and everything seems to be out to kill him. The game really begins when Lester is captured by humanoid aliens and stages a jail break to find a way out of the prison with his co-inmate in tow. Faithful to the original game, the port did little to change the graphics or audio of the game except to add more detail and clarity. However, for die hard fans the low resolution mode is an option in settings. Other new additions in the anniversary edition are two new difficulty modes besides normal: hard and hardcore. For more variety in game play the option to use touch mode over pad mode is included. The cool thing with the D-pad is it can be moved with a tap from the top of the screen to the bottom depending on grip preference.

Death is not a rare occurrence as Lester cannot sustain injuries, one hit is a KO. This makes trial and error an essential part of the game and the liberal amount of checkpoints a blessing. However, to finish the game one doesn’t rely on skill but rather large amounts of patience to retrace steps to avoid being shot, stung or devoured. Another World stays true to the original in almost every way and while fans of the game will celebrate, I wouldn’t recommend this game to everyone. If you have an affinity for sci-fi genre and old school games give this a try. However, if you lack the patience for retracing your steps I would avoid getting especially at its current price of $4.99.
