Best Diet Foods app review: a very basic primer of healthy food choices

Reviews

Introduction

Best Diet Foods by Michael Quach is one of those apps where you’re glad you didn’t have to pay for the content. It has some serious flaws but even so, contains some good information you might want to check out for a couple of minutes if you have nothing better to do.

What It's All About

Best Diet Foods is pretty basic: there’s no organization, no images of the foods it talks about (other than an illustration of a bunch of grapes on every page (just like the icon), and no search function. There is a favorites function where you can star items, but for what purpose? Unless you’re going to refer to this all the time to try to add some beneficial foods into your diet I can’t really see someone using this app beyond one time.

It’s hard to tell how many foods are listed because, as mentioned, there is no organization to it at all. At first I thought it was in alphabetical order, but that wasn’t true. All you can do is tap the “next” arrow button to move to the next food item. There’s a “previous” arrow button as well.

Options and Features

Other options within the app are the All button (which shows you your favorites – you have to toggle this switch back to All before you will return to the regular list) and More, which gives you the option to email, SMS, or copy the food item. You can also share or rate the app from here, and see the rest of the apps this developer has to offer.

Speaking of what this developer has to offer, the information provided isn’t even really “diet” information; no nutritional information beyond why it is healthy for you is provided. You aren’t told what an item is (do you know what tahini is?), how many calories per serving, or how many servings a day or week you should strive for. Information you might see is how much calcium, zinc, or other micronutrients the food holds, that it is a good source of protein, and if it helps lower your blood pressure.

That’s it. That’s the entire app.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Has some very basic information about health benefits of some foods

Cons

  • Very basic
  • No organizational structure, which is painful
  • No way to search for certain foods; you can’t even tell if a food is listed so you have to scroll through them all to find out if it is
  • No in-depth nutritional information about any of the foods listed
  • Terribly boring user interface with no images aside from a childish rendering of a bunch of grapes

Final Verdict

I give this app a really low score. I think it could be a lot better; organize it into certain groups, maybe alphabetical, and add a search function. If it had images of each food item, and maybe a bit more information like how much of the food makes up one serving. That would be an improvement. Until then, it’s really not worth the time to download it and scroll through it.
