What It's All About

The Atkins Diet was developed to help people lose weight by cutting carbs. There are several stages to the diet, during which time your carb intake will differ.

The initial stage has you keep your carb intake extremely low, while the subsequent stages allow slightly more carbs. This diet is fairly effective, particularly for very overweight or obese people.

The app offers you several features to help you with your weight loss goals. You can set up your own diet or use ones offered. If you don’t want to create an account you can still access the app’s huge database of foods, the dining out guide, recipes, and acceptable foods.

If you do create an account, you can set it up using your name, user name, email address, a password, your height, current weight, goal weight, and the phase of the Atkins Diet you are currently following. For fun, I put in Phase 1 to see what the app would tell me.

What It

What You Can Do With It

The app automatically generates a meal plan for you for the day. I was told to make scrambled eggs with cheese and sautéed onions for breakfast. Besides breakfast, dinner was the only food I was told to make; the other meals/snacks were all packaged or otherwise-processed foods.

I don’t eat processed foods so this definitely wouldn’t work for me; it’s a good thing the app offers the option to input your own foods. All I had to do was clear the day and then I could add what I ate.

You have the option to search for the foods you ate, to scan barcodes, enter a custom food item, or search through your favorites. It’s really easy to search for a food item. Once you key in the food item, you pick from grocery, recipes, restaurants, and products.

I tried to search for a few items but was unable to find them. It appears that most of the Atkins products are there but regular items like “eggs” are just not in the database. I don’t find this very helpful.

Once you’ve created your account, you can also use the Progress tab to track your weight and your daily carb intake. If you rotate your device you will see a chart showing your data.

Pros and Cons

Final Verdict

Overall this app is probably okay for people who are following the Atkins diet and eating a lot of the Atkins products.

I know there are a lot of foods allowed on Atkins that aren’t allowed on other low-carb diets (processed foods, sugar alcohols, and more) so if you’re following the food suggestions and aren’t actually following Atkins this app might not work.

In addition, I didn’t like that I couldn’t find half of the food items I searched for; what’s the point of having a food tracking app if the food I eat isn’t there?
