Appy Geek app review: keep up with your techy and geeky news

Introduction

Appy Geek is an app by Mobiles Republic and strives to keep everyone up to date on the world of technology. Choose from different kinds of topics that are of interest to you and customize your experience so you can keep up to date on all things geeky. If you’re sitting at home with your iPad, or on public transport with your phone, this App will keep you on top of all the news. Appy Geek was last updated on the 12^th of June 2013 and takes about 23 MB of storage on your device.

Customization is the key

On the main page, there is an overview of topics nicely illustrated with a photo of the latest news. Here you can use the edit button and remove or organize your different topics. If you go to the page to the left, you can select from around 70 odd different subjects, ranging from tech companies to video games and from mobile devices to social networks and other services. There are also top stories in four other languages, namely French, Spanish, German and Italian.

After having added your favorite topics to your home screen (you can also add extra home screens if you want more topics easily accessible), you simply tap on a topic to get an overview of all the news that recently occurred. You can also activate notifications on a specific topic, which is really handy if you want to keep on top of things. Cleverly, you can set “silent hours”, where the app will not send you any alerts. The only downside is that I wanted to add a bigger topic to my front page (like Tech Companies), but I was only able to add news from a specific company, not simply all in one nice topic.

 

Where do they get it all from?

News Republic, the company behind the app, gets its news from numerous different sources. If for one reason you don’t like reading news from a particular outlet, you can easily disable this one so no articles from that particular website will ever pop up again. Regrettable, this leaves the app open for many double posts, especially when a popular event is happening, or new announcements are made on anything tech related. One thing is for sure, with this app you will never miss the news you’re interested in. You can create an account which means you can sync your home screen across all your devices, as well as receiving the Appy Geek Daily via email.  You can also download all news items for offline reading, which is really handy if you’re on a long, internet-less commute.
