'Roll In The Hole' Is Par For The Puzzle Game Course

Roll in the Hole by Chillingo invites you to help an undeniably cute, round, fuzzy panda named PoPo in his quest to eat popsicle treats and arrive safely into a hole. Although the game is cute, interesting, and challenging I wasn't particularly compelled to slide to unlock my iPhone over and over again to continue helping PoPo on his quest for popsicles. PoPo must be tipped and rolled by tapping the right and left sides of the screen in order to reach his tasty popsicle treats. This sounds simple enough and is indeed incredibly easy to grasp. It does, however, become increasingly sophisticated with each level, as you’re required to tap more advantageously. You might begin a level by holding a long tap on the right but suddenly begin feverishly tapping the left side in order to save PoPo from certain death by rolling off the screen. The sensors seem to recognize longer taps and to decipher taps made with more conviction from lazy, casual taps. As the levels progress a mean gorilla by the name of Uggi is introduced who tries to steal PoPo’s treats, adding more depth and interest tothe game. Obstacles such as sand and ice and increasing complex levels serve to maintain a sense of challenge. What might be most motivating are the endearing cheers and celebratory noises made by PoPo when he’s victorious. Roll in the Hole is everything one would expect from Chillingo who has published hits such as Angry Birds and Cut The Rope. This game checks all the boxes requisite for inclusion in the cute animal, physics-based platform game genre. The only box Roll in the Hole doesn’t seem to check is originality. The animal may have changed but it otherwise remains a variation of games we’ve seen so many times before.
