Introduction
Learn Dutch FREE – AccelaStudy by Renkara Media Group, Inc. is designed using the AccelaStudy method of learning languages. This is an award winning software method that makes you understand and pronounce words as quickly as possible using flashcards, quizzes, and pronunciations by the app.. The app is created with both iPhone and iPad in mind. This free version is merely a glorified demo of what the full app would be like with only 132 words. The full version costs $9.99.
Different ways to learn
This iPhone languages app offers a few different ways to learn the language. First you can study, where the word shows up in English and Dutch, and the app’s voice will repeat the sound in Dutch.
Secondly, there is a “spaced repetition” option, where you see and hear the word in English, and you should repeat it in Dutch. When tapping the screen, the correct answer will show up and you can rate yourself good or bad.
The third option is using flashcards, which work very similar to the spaced repetition. However, the English and Dutch words are never visible at the same time, and no self-assessment is available. Last but not least, a hands free version of this languages app is available.
Just press play, and all the words will continue being repeated in English and in Dutch. Endlessly. There are two ways to test yourself as well, one being a quiz where you tap the right answer (choose from four) and one is an audio quiz, which has the word spoken in English instead of written.

Tracking how well you’re doing
On the “My Progress” screen, you can see how well you are doing per category. Strangely enough it’s not possible to see your progress for all categories combined in this screen. These stats are assembled by using the data from “Spaced repetition” and the quizzes.
A search function is embedded too, but I’m not sure how handy that is in a database of only 132 words. I’m sure it will be handy in the paid version of this app. You can personalize most tests as well, changing the which order the words come in, and which language is displayed first.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Many ways to study
- Good quizzes
- Tracking your progress
Cons
- Only 132 words
- No cumulative stats
Conclusion
As a Dutch speaker myself, it’s quite hard to tell if an app for learning the language is good. However, if this was any other language, I would play around with it and at least give it a chance. The lack of words in this trial version is a bit annoying, but then again, nothing in this world is free.
It’s fun to play the quizzes and test your skills at the words you learned using different methods. I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to learn my language, before it is forgotten. Test this free version first to see if it’s right for you.
