Let Apple Do Your Stalking For You With 'Find My Friends'

Find My Friends, a universal app recently released by Apple, gives users the ability to locate people as well as sharing your location with them. With the recent hoopla about a man finding out his wife was cheating on him using the this app, there is certainly going to be an increased level of curiosity about it. However, all salacious stories aside, this app is pretty cool on its own and doesn't need jaw-dropping publicity. First off, the backdrop is smart. The tan and canvas-looking backdrop of the app evokes an explorer-type of feeling. Secondly, I am amazed at how much information the app can tell about each of your contacts including a description of their locations (i.e. school, Pismo Beach), how far they are from your location, and even a satellite map pinpointing their locations. Thirdly, you have control over your stalking (hopefully non-stalking) destiny.  You can control the settings and adjust privacy as you deem necessary. Parental controls are also available. Of course, you can't stalk the people you probably really want to like the handsome captain of a sports team or cute cheerleader, or even Brad Pitt (let the paparazzi take care of that).  However, I can see how this can be a great tool for parents. They can see if their kid got to school on time or if they decided to play hookie. Many parental headaches can be offset by this app to their children's chagrin. In addition, this is a great tool for groups of people who want to be aware of each other's location. You can choose to share your location for a limited period of time which is a useful feature. Find My Friends is a useful and clever app.  So, the next time your buddy wants to meet at Subway, you'll be able to see exactly which one out of the 20 locations in the one-mile radius he's throwing down a five dollar foot-long sandwich.
