League of Heroes app review: a free-to-play fantasy role playing adventure

Reviews

Introduction

In League of Heroes by Gamelion Studios you take the role of a young boy who is tasked to clear out all the monsters that are hiding around in the forest around the town of Frognest. Throughout the game you will receive quests from villagers and by completing these you will receive experience and coins. The latter are used to buy better equipment, while the former will grant you new powers and make you stronger when you level up.

Fetch Me This, Kill XX Number of Monsters, and so on

The quests in this game remind me a lot about quests in MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). Basically, a person in town asks you to collect a number of items which you then need to go out and collect. Every hour or so you can head out of town five times, meaning you will need to come back to the game several times to be able to finish some quests.

Every time you go out of town, you go to a newly spawned area filled with monsters for you to kill. They will randomly drop experience, coins, and items you need to collect. When your quest is done, return back to Frognest for your reward and of course for a new quest.

The weather in the game is actually based on the weather where you are, though Internet is required for this feature.

Graphics, Audio, and Gameplay

The game looks very fresh and cute. The art team behind the game uses a lot of color and all the characters are well-designed. The voices of all the characters are well done too, which is quite surprising for a free-to-play game. The main character keeps talking to you, the player, which can get pretty annoying if you’re standing still for a while waiting for your energy to replenish.

The biggest letdown of this game are the controls. Moving your character around is done by using a d-pad on the screen. Currently in most games, this appears wherever you place your thumb, but here it’s fixed, making moving your character around very sluggish and annoying. Fighting is done with on-screen buttons, which is fine, but the fighting lacks punch, you just slice through enemies without any feedback.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • High production values
  • Silly voiceover
  • Endless quests
  • Real Life weather effects

Cons

  • Waiting to play
  • Bad controls
  • No feedback

Conclusion

I don’t think this game is particularly good. Repeating fetch quests and monotonous fighting gets very boring very quickly. Add in the annoying main character that keeps talking to you and you’ve got a very bad mix. The graphics and audio, however, stand out, and the voice acting is fun. I wouldn’t recommend this game to anyone even though it looks fantastic. The repetitive gameplay and boring fetch quests really disappointed me. This app is designed for both iPad and iPhone.
