Weathermob app review: become a full-fledged weather reporter in a social media context

Reviews

Introduction

This is a novel idea for an app which combines basic weather forecasting functionality with a news feed and social networking elements similar to Facebook.

I think this is a very well-polished and excellently delivered concept for an app and although it isn’t the sort of social networking medium I would choose to use, it definitely is quite entertaining seeing people share photos of their local area.

I Don't Care What the Weatherman Says

I must admit, when I first started up this app and started browsing through the user interface, I couldn’t help but find the bombardment of buttons, features, and social content quite overwhelming.

There is obviously a large Weathermob user-base, which is great; however, it does take a few minutes to become acclimatized to the way the system works.

Once you’ve found the location you’re looking for and you understand how it all works, using Weathermob quickly becomes a breeze, as you will see.

Options and Features

The primary view will offer a news feed of recent posts and activity from users close to your current location, and if you tap the colorful button at the bottom you’ll be able to begin posting your own weather reports.

You can select from a slot machine-style menu: the current weather conditions, your current mood, and a third section entitled “it’s weather for…” and this can be accompanied by your own personal message, an image, or a video. You can also share your reports with friends and family online via Facebook and Twitter.

From what I've seen of the posts so far, the Weathermob community seems to consist of some wonderfully friendly individuals and there are definitely some very interesting characters who regularly provide amusing updates!

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Unique combination of weather forecasting and social networking
  • Post your own weather reports with details of your current mood, your own message, image, and video
  • Connect with like-minded individuals by connecting to other users’ channels
  • Share your weather reports online via Facebook and Twitter

Cons

  • User interface appears a little cluttered upon first impressions, although this can be quickly learned

Final Words

This app is a little too involved for what I would want to get out of a weather app but for the social media junkies out there, Weathermob definitely offers a wonderfully novel approach to weather forecasting, reporting, and the sharing of media in general.

I’ve mentioned that the interface is a little heavy upon first impressions, but now that I’m getting used to it I think it would be fair to say that I’m liking it more and more because it is pretty comprehensive and you’ve got everything within arm’s reach at all times, so to speak.

There are loads of different user channels on Weathermob and I can imagine there being the potential for a lot of interesting discussion unrelated to weather. Whether you’re mad about meteorology or you’re just looking to connect with new and interesting people, this app is well worth checking out.
