Beat Slice app review: slice and dice your favorite songs to create rockin’ ringtones

Reviews

Introduction

This is a fun little app which enables you to import songs from your Music Library and apply numerous effects to them in order to create some vividly unique mixes you can then transform into your very own ringtones. These can be up to 40 seconds in length to showcase your mixing styles every time you receive a call.

I’ve been having quite a bit of fun playing around with Beat Slice trying to turn some of my favorite classics into crazy ringtones. I haven’t had much luck so far but I’m getting there!

It should be noted that the option to save your mixes as ringtones or export them to your Music Library is only available if you upgrade to the full version of this app via in-app purchase.

Slice It Up

This is another one of those music apps where, as a musician, I would think of this as having little usefulness in the context of serious musicianship.

Despite this, there’s definitely a lot of fun to be had with Beat Slice so don’t stop reading just yet!

The basic user interface features a customizable grid of squares which you can tap to activate or deactivate various audio effects such as reverse, pitch shifter, lo-fi, and others. There are more effects available via in-app purchase.

You can import and play tracks from your Music Library to start applying the effects, and one feature I found pretty cool was being able to create up to four loops of effects. This enables you to create some lengthier mixes to push up to the ringtone limit of 40 seconds.

Options

When it comes to creating ringtones, I’m a little bit disappointed by how the recording process works because it seems quite imprecise and clumsy.

Instead of being able to select segments of audio to export as ringtones from a wave format layout, you instead must time the recording to start at the correct part of the track before fine-tweaking it from the menu which follows.

While this allows a fair degree of accuracy, it would streamline the process greatly if the audio could be laid out in a more visual format.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Slice and dice your favorite tracks from your Music Library to create original mixes
  • Export your mixes as ringtones or save them to your Music Library
  • Funky, colorful user interface makes mixing even more interesting
  • Reasonable amount of customization options

Cons

  • No social media integration
  • Recording segments of audio to export them as ringtones is not particularly accurate and would be better accomplished with a slightly different visual layout

Final Words

Besides enhancing the precision of the recording functionality, the only other addition I can think of that would improve Beat Slice is to enable users to either share their ringtones via Facebook and Twitter or to introduce a social element to the app which would allow users to share mixes within a Beat Slice community.

Aside from that, I think Beat Slice is a great deal of fun and while some of the effects feel a little dry or stale, you can definitely slap together some quirky mixes and produce some interesting original sounds.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get slicing!
