Where am I at? app review: the question on a lot of people’s minds some of the time
Introduction
Where Am I At? by Aaron McDonald is an app that will tell you exactly where you are. Taking up only 1.8 MB, this app will do nothing more than tell you where you are including the address, the exact GPS coordinates, and your altitude. It also tracks your position when you move. This
navigation app for iphone is now free for a limited time, but I can’t see why this app isn’t free all the time, as this is almost exactly what Google Maps does when you click on the Find Me button.
The Map and the Address Functions
When you open the map, this app asks you to allow your current location. The app will then instantly zoom into a map of where you are. Outside of Europe and the U.S. the app won’t find the address easily and sometimes not at all. The Map application it uses is by far not as accurate and precise as Google Maps.
It does instantly display my coordinates, both longitude and latitude. You can easily copy the information to the clipboard for you to paste in any other app where you can use a text field (just select paste!). The app only has one small ad banner in the bottom, and I wonder if this would also be the case in the paid version of the app.
Features this App Should Have but Doesn’t
This app has a huge amount of possibility. They could make this into a GPS app with a route description, and add in tons of information of the place where you are. As of now, it just displays where you are, not what is around you. I’d like to see a list of local businesses, hospitals, police station, gas stations, and other helpful information of where I am at. They might as well called this app Where am I, as they don’t show you where you are at. No information at all is given beyond your very specific location. A compass function would be really handy too, so you can see where you are going.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- The app shows you where you are
- Export your location details
Cons
- It uses a very out-of-date map
- Doesn’t work well outside of the United States or Europe
- The developer hasn’t taken in to account the full potential of the app
Conclusion
This app hasn’t reached its full potential yet. As of now it’s very easy to use, but does nothing more than any other map app already does. It simply shows you where you are. In the U.S. and Europe, this app will give you the exact address of where you are (as does Google Maps), but it would be so much better if the app will also show you what is around you. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone. I can recommend this app only for people who want to know their exact GPS coordinates.
