Europe Offline map with directU app review: a great tool for anyone exploring Europe

Reviews

Introduction

Europe - Offline map with directU by NNG Global Services Kft. is a free full-on map for the whole of Europe. I was really surprised when I got this app as I had to wait forever before the app was loaded on my device. That’s not too strange, since the app takes up almost 1.40 GB! This is  absolutely justified though, as the complete map of Europe needs to downloaded on your device and is accessible offline wherever you are! Not only does this include zoomed in versions of the map, but you can even see all the roads in Europe, as well as foot paths and cycling lanes.

Where's the Catch?

That was the question I was asking myself when I was waiting for the download to complete. After booting up the app, my question was soon answered. Every ad you see in this app is for a car navigation app on the App Store, created by the very same people! But I don’t mind, as this app has all the roads as well, and is free! You can zoom in really far, and as said before, it doesn’t only show car roads, but also highlights foot paths and cycling lanes. The map works exactly as you expect it to work, meaning it sports multi touch zoom and scrolling using just your fingers.

Other Features

First of all there is a compass that will always point you to the true north. There is a search function (although according to one of the review on the App Store, it couldn’t even find Barcelona) where you supposedly can find cities and street names. You can easily add locations to your favorites and the map will always be up to date using open street maps. A trip computer is also featured, which, if you are connected with the Internet, shows you speed, GPS coordinates, position accuracy, distance as the crow flies, and elevation.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Completely free
  • A detailed map of Europe in your pocket
  • Tons of navigational functions
  • Shows foot paths and cycling lanes

Cons

  • It’s a huge app to download
  • Search function doesn’t work very well

Conclusion

In all my days as an app reviewer I’ve finally done it. I’ve found a free offline map. Although this isn’t a world map, which is my next quest, this is a very good start. The initial download of 1.4 GB is definitely worth it, although you might want to clean up all the bad apps off your device before starting this download. The maps load quickly and are full in detail. This app is perfect for anyone traveling Europe, be it by public transport or by car. All the maps are always up to date. The app is compatible with iPhone and iPad. Go get it now!
