Baby First Puzzle Farm Lite app review: an introduction to puzzles

Reviews

Introduction

This app acts as a wonderful and fun way to introduce your child to the concept of puzzles. The app is incredibly child-friendly so mom and dad can just sit back and let their little one figure things out on her own.

A Fun Educational Experience

It’s not always possible to tie the word fun to education but with this app you can do just that. I loved that it was designed specifically for little hands, with all the features being easy to touch and use. Children are given a variety of puzzle shapes that they must fit into the right shadow. All they need to do is touch the shape and drag it to the right spot.

To add to the educational experience a narrator says the name of each item so players also learn to identify these shapes and pictures.

There aren’t a ton of options but you are given some fun features such as having the pictures appear as a “wooden look” or a “cartoon look.” Kids can switch back and forth on their own with ease. There is no timer to complete the puzzles so kids are free to learn and explore on their own time without feeling rushed.

In the background there is upbeat music playing and each time they properly place a puzzle piece there are fun sound effects to capture their attention. The colors used are vivid and bright and the puzzle pieces are relatively large so they are easy to grab.

Keeping the Kids Busy

What’s great is that this app comes with 90 different puzzle pieces, some of which are 3D, to add to the fun. Of course you can opt to upgrade to the full version and get even more puzzles, but the free one should keep them busy for quite awhile. If your child is feeling a bit frustrated or need some help you can switch to the automatic-hand mode which will place the shapes for him while saying the name of each item. He will still have the opportunity to learn but won’t end up feeling frustrated.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • There are 90 different puzzle pieces to place
  • Kids will learn by sound, sight, and voice description
  • Very kid-friendly; all controls are simple to use

Cons

  • If your child really likes puzzles she will likely go through them pretty fast
  • May be a bit too basic for some kids as there are only three shapes in each puzzle set
  • It’s really just an introduction to puzzles

Final Thoughts

I think as an introduction to puzzles this is a great app. Not only does it teach kids about matching shapes and pictures but it also helps them with learning the words for these shapes and pictures so they are learning on a variety of levels (sight, sound, and touch). By the time they work through the 90 puzzles supplied they will likely be ready to move on to a more challenging puzzle app.
