'EPOCH' Is A Superb Cover Evolved Game Powered By Unreal Engine

Reviews

EPOCH, developed by Uppercut Games, is a third person cover based shooter where you don't actually do any shooting. Throughout the game you play as a guardian class robot named Epoch. After waking up in the middle of a war torn city, you begin searching for the Princess you've been tasked to protect as your last and only known mission directive. You soon come across legions of bad bots standing in your way, and have to fight your way into the heart of the city. The story is told bit by bit through intercepted emails, broadcasts, and even text messages as you learn what happened from several different perspectives. Gameplay revolves around cover. As a stage begins, you take cover behind a wall as enemies appear in the background. Enemies shoot bullets, throw grenades, and fire laser beams and it is your job to avoid them and fire back from behind cover. As I mentioned before, you don't actually shoot. You just tap on an enemy and Epoch will fire automatically; occasionally stopping to reload. So careful timing is a necessity in order to achieve maximum fire superiority without getting your metal chassis shot to pieces. A level consists of a number of waves and the occasional intro to a new enemy type that will need to be destroyed before moving on. I kind of found this new gameplay mechanic pretty fun because it added a little bit of strategy into the mix. I had to cartwheel cover to cover avoiding enemy fire so I could poke out and fire back at the right time and come out the victor. The thrill of escaping an exploding grenade after staying in cover a little too long to fire off that extra burst for the kill added a sense of urgency in some levels. The game does a great job teaching you the controls for these movements at the beginning and I doubt you'll have difficulty playing the game.

After beating a level, you'll be rewarded with salvaged gear, intercepted transmissions, experience, and credits. Credits are used to buy new gear from the scrap yard. There are several different ammunition variants, from corrosive 'damage-over-time' shots to electrified 'stun' shots, and these variants can be applied to every weapon, including your specials. There is a ton of equipment to buy, and you'll never afford everything in one play through. The initial play through of the game should take about an hour. It's a really short game, but it's meant to be played multiple times. The game starts you off on easy difficulty, with each subsequent difficulty being unlocked after you beat the one below it. You have to beat the game on hard if you want to get the whole story and the true ending. The game feels like an on-rails shooting gallery, but it's a fun on-rails shooting gallery. Not bad at all.
