Dead Defence app review: this time we’re keeping zombies out

Reviews

Introduction

Dead Defence by PlayFlock chooses a grittier setting to keep zombies out compared to other tower defense games. One of the most popular game genres on iOS is the tower defense genre. There are so many different games of this type in the App Store that you will never be able to play them all. For developers, the trick is to get an original setting and make the game as accessible as possible for players. Dead Defence by PlayFlock has definitely picked a setting I haven’t seen often in a tower defense game, not counting Plants versus Zombies. Is it successful in keeping players interested?

Basic Tower Defense and Some Interesting Twists

When playing Dead Defence, you soon find out that the basic premise is very similar to all other tower defense games. You build a tower to kill enemies and killed every enemy grants you a small currency bonus which you use to build more towers to avoid the ever-growing waves of enemies of getting to your base.

In this game you can build one tower on top of your base, giving it a range and attack bonus. Each and every tower has different strengths and weaknesses, so you must think strategically about which towers you place where. At the start of the game you will only have access to one type, but by fighting more you will have the choice of making the towers stronger or researching different types of defensive towers.

Unlocking New Towers or Buying Them All

Where this game adds another interesting twist is that you don’t slowly unlock new towers the further you get in the game. The game makes you work for them. Each mission you finish gives you a research point bonus, and these research points will be used to upgrade your towers or unlock new ones. Each and every tower and upgrade has a specific set of requirements to be able to unlock them, but the most important thing is that you will need to have enough research points. If you’re lucky, killing zombies will reward you with points as well, but winning levels is the quickest way to go about it.

For players who want access to these towers instantly, they are available for purchase for $10.99.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Classic tower defense gameplay with a twist
  • Play the entire game for free

Cons

  • Buying all towers is pretty expensive

Conclusion

Dead Defence does a really good job compared to other free tower defense games in the App Store. It combines the classic gameplay we all love with a nifty upgrade mechanic that hardcore players will like, even though they might have to play a few levels over and over again. The game has a lot of levels, and you will need to play all of them to save the world from the zombie apocalypse. The game is compatible with both iPhone and iPad, and only takes up 87 MB of space on your device. Tower defense fans, definitely give this game a try!
