If you have wondered what those black and white square puzzles popping up all over ads are they are QR codes, or quick response codes, a type of matrix bar code used to name an object. First used by the automotive industry to track cars in production, the use of QR codes has quickly expanded into advertising, merchandise, and security. The Norton Snap QR Code Reader app by Symantec is the key you need to unlock these codes safely.
Norton Snap uses the iPhone's camera to read QR codes and other type of 2D bar codes as well. These codes link directly to websites which the app scans for viruses before approving it and letting you through. The Norton Snap quickly made itself a permanent home on my iPhone home screen. After the quick download, all it took was a quick intro on how to use the app, then aim, and voilà - QR read. The app managed to scan codes before I had even a chance to try to focus my camera, a pleasant surprise.
The app saves your web history making it easy to trace your steps back to that advertisement you just couldn’t remember the name of. It also gives you the option to share websites with friends or family via email. Improvements could be made on this function seeing there is no way to share a website through social media, such as Facebook or Twitter.
Personally I hadn’t taken the time to find out what QR codes were all about, but the Norton Snap QR Code Reader app has really made it simple enough that next time one pops up I won’t hesitate to scan away.
