Slate.com app review: all your news in one spot

Reviews

Introduction

This is a news app that is able to gather all the important headlines and give them to you in one central location. The idea is that you can quickly scan through the stories and find the ones that interest you without having to search all through the Internet.

News with Substance

It should be noted that this app is from The Washington Post so it carries with it a sense of credibility and reliability. Of course those are two pretty important things when you’re getting caught up on the news.

When you launch the app you’ll be taken to the home page which offers a couple of stories under each topic/category. You can click on any of the stories or on the topic for “More” in that category. Almost all stories feature pictures with them and you can share stories through email, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as adjust the font size for easy reading.

If you want you can simply stick to the Home page and find everything you want there or you can sample some of the tab offerings such as the Popular stories, The Slatest stories, Photos, and more.

"More" Explained

Okay so yes there are “More” features but what exactly are they? Well you’ll have access to a library of Podcasts, videos, Blogs, Double X, and you can view all your saved stories from this section. This is meant to be a very user-friendly experience, making finding and reading the news as easy and quick as possible.

Overall I found the app pretty easy to use although there does seem to be almost an overload of stories. If you’re looking for something specific it may take a bit of browsing. However by forcing you to browse through the content you may also come across some interesting pieces you wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

What is Slate?

For those unfamiliar with Slate, it’s a daily online magazine that has been providing people with the news since 1996. You’ll find the stories here have a strong focus on editorial voice, humor, wit, and culture. It just feels like a very current, hip, and trendy place to find all the top stories.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A large selection of content divided into categories such as news, politics, sports, technology, health and science, and more
  • Extremely user-friendly
  • Extras like videos, photos, blogs, and podcasts
  • The ability to share stories
  • The ability to adjust the font size for ease of reading
  • The ability to save stories in your archive for future access

Cons

  • Some of the content is rather slow to load, this is the same for the menus
  • It can be cumbersome to find exactly what it is you’re looking for

Final Verdict

So the question is whether or not this can be your go-to news source. While I found it quite easy to use and there was plenty of content, there was still something holding me back from saying this is the ultimate go-to news source. I think it’s a good option but shouldn’t be your only one.
