WorldMate app review: plan and manage every aspect of your trip

Reviews

Introduction

WorldMate is a rather popular travel app. Used by over 10 million travelers all over the world, WorldMate supplies a wide array of travel services such as booking your trip, real time flight alerts, and online check-in. The app also features a host of sharing functions, weather forecasts, and currency convertors.

The best iPhone apps for travel

All-in-all it seems like this app is taking way too much on its plate, but I wonder if that actually is the case, or does it really have everything covered?

The app allows you to search flights, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. If you have already booked a flight, you can simply forward the booking email to WorldMate to get it featured in your app. You can’t book flights straight from this app, which is a bit of a letdown, as the developer promises this in the description in the App Store. You can also add a trip by simply filling in a form, though this trip information will be limited to everything you add to the trip.

The best iPhone and iPad apps for finding hotel deals

When you have added a trip, either by emailing the confirmation or adding it yourself, the app shows you the itinerary within the app. Flight status is locked, as is the calendar sync, and you will have to go Gold to use these features. This costs $9.99, which I think is a bit steep for limited functionality.

Other Functions

As mentioned before, the app sports tons of other handy travel tools, such as a weather forecast, local search, and a currency converter. The weather forecast is beautifully illustrated by weather photos and the search function and trip cities are also easily managed. The local search option is a fantastic addition, but is limited to some European countries, the United Stated, Canada, and Australia. The currency converter is very handy. You can set up to three different currencies and the app will calculate the right amount in all three instantly. The converter also updates automatically, so you’ll always have the right exchange rate at hand.

The last feature is the Tip Calculator, which can prove very handy. Different settings are added per country (not all of them accurate) but it can help to find out if you should tip or not.

Conclusion

WorldMate doesn’t quite make the cut. I’m especially disappointed with the lack of booking functionalities. The extra functions such as the currency converter and the tip calculator are great to have, but the main functionality of the app is lacking. Most of the promised features were nowhere to be found, while some of these were locked just for users of the Gold version of the app. The app is compatible with both iPhone and iPad. This free version won't be mistaken for one of the best flight apps on the market. But, the Gold version is a great option.
