Pic Booth Free app review: combine multiple photos in all different kinds of frames

Reviews

Introduction

There are many different photo apps available in the App Store, most of them focusing on just one aspect of photo editing. A lot of these apps have a free trial version of the app, and you will need to pay to get access to all the options the app has to offer. Pic Booth Free by nectarbits is one of these apps, and it focuses on creating a collage of your photos and allowing you to put a frame around them. Even in this free version, the app has nothing else to offer in terms of editing, which is a huge let down.

Creating a Collage

When you boot up the app, you can either take a photo or select up to six from your Camera Roll to add into your collage. After your selection, you can choose which ones you want to use in your collage, which seems a bit doubling up on work, as you just selected them! When you finally get to the collage page, the photos are already laid out in the order the app deems fit. Luckily you can reorder them to your liking by dragging them around.

Here you can also choose a layout, a background, and a border. Regrettably, only four borders are available in the free version of the app, and they’re all quite hideous. For the other options, only a limited amount are available too, but it will give you a good example of what the app can actually do.

Filters, Sharing Options and In-App Purchases

When you’re happy with your lay out, borders, and backgrounds, you can change the way the photo looks by adding one of eight different filters. These take a while to load, and with every photo in your collage, a different filter will be applied. When you’re done you can choose to share your creation using email, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Throughout the app you will see a small ad in the bottom of the screen, just above the tool set you need to use, which makes accidentally tapping the ad a huge possibility. There is no way of switching these off, but you can buy different packs in-app to expand the possibilities. Each of these packs will set you back $0.99, but doesn’t get rid of the ads.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Rearrange your photos
  • Share via most social networks

Cons

  • Select only up to six photos
  • Annoying ad placement and no way to switch it off
  • Only a few options in the free version

Conclusion

Pic Booth Free is a photo app I wouldn’t recommend, purely due to the lack of options. It’s easy for any app creator to add in the free Aviary editor, which allows you for a lot more freedom. The limitation of only six photos per collage is also pretty annoying. The app is compatible with iPhone and iPad and is just over 12 MB in size.
