Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic app review: the best Star Wars game ever made?

Introduction

Before I start I have to admit that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (or from now on KOTOR) is one of my favorite video games of all times. It helps that I’m a fan of the movies, but Bioware has captured the true Star Wars feeling and put it in game form back in 2003, while Aspyr Media, Inc. has done a perfect job porting this classic to iPad. The game is a story- and dialog-driven RPG, where you get to create your own character and live through one of the most exciting Star Wars stories yet.

The game delivers an experience that can take up to 30 hours of your time, even longer if you play it like me, and if you explore everything possible.

Gameplay Mechanics

KOTOR is in a sense a classic RPG, but instead of dwarves and elves, you will encounter all kinds of different races. Your character has all kinds of statistics, skills and feats that are well known to anyone who ever played a Dungeons and Dragons game. While completing quests, your character will gain experience, and when you’ve collected enough, your character will level up and will receive some more points to boost your character and make him (or her) stronger.

You will also find all kinds of weapons, armor, and other cool items to dress up your character and boost its power.

 

Dialog, Choices, and Characters

As mentioned before, KOTOR is very dialog-based. You will constantly meet all kinds of characters with whom you will have conversations, and you have to pick what your character will say to these people. These choices play a big part, as you can either be a good guy (light side) or a bad guy (dark side). Every time you choose an answer during a dialog you will receive points nudging you to either side of the force spectrum. These choices will drastically change the story.

You will also meet a few characters during your journey that, depending on how you play, will join you on your quest. Some of these will be complete goody two-shoes, while others will be the most eviil characters you’ve ever met. These characters level up the same as your character, and save for their alignment with the force, you can build them out however you want.
