Transferable PRO app review: transfer your photos to your laptop without using iTunes

Reviews

Introduction

The first thing I noticed while booting up Transferable PRO by BEWHERE PROJECTS LTD was that even though I’m running an 1.8 MB app on my iPad 2, the app asked me to close all apps that were currently open. I find it really hard to believe that an app that small needs so much memory to run. The app is designed to be used as a web server, meaning after you open the app, you go to a webpage in your Internet browser and you will be able to see and download all your photos from your device. Yes, that is exactly the same functionality as just using your cable to link up your device using USB.

How Does the App Work?

As you boot up the app (after having shut down every other single app on your device) the app gives you a link to a webpage. From here you can see all your photos. The main functionality lies within the actual web page, and not per se in the app. The app just simply sets itself up as a web server. The web page itself is really well-designed. You can simply select the photos you want to download by clicking the star icon, or you can just pick one to download. You can even download the entire album!

Navigating while looking at a photo full-screen can be done by using the arrow keys, while spacebar selects them for download.

Zip and Download

When you have selected all the photos you want to download, the app will actually create a ZIP file which you then download to your desktop computer. This is quite annoying, as if you don’t have enough free space on your device for this ZIP archive, the app won’t be able to zip your selection, meaning you won’t be able to download the files. The only reason why I would want to download my photos is to create more room on my device as it is running out of space! If only the option of just copying them directly via the app was available, a lot of frustration could be avoided. Luckily I still have my trusted iPad cable.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Download your photos wirelessly from your device to a desktop computer
  • Browser controls are very well designed

Cons

  • You can’t copy the photos without creating a ZIP archive on your device
  • The app is useless if you are near your desktop computer and have an iCable

Conclusion

Don’t get me wrong; I really like this app. I just wish it had some more functionalities that make it stand out. At this moment, the only thing it does is copy from your device to your desktop computer wirelessly, which I can’t imagine anyone needs (unless you and the computer you want to copy to are in completely different places). The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone.
