Learn Something New Every Day With 'HowStuffWorks' App

[Editor's Note: This review was written on July 25, 2011, pre-dating the launch of our News section on August 29, 2011. It is being re-published so it can be properly archived in the News section.] Now this is how a content rich entity like HowStuffWorks.com should be developed into an iPad app. The HowStuffWorks for iPad app is well-organized, bursting at the seams with information and a great one to have around for a few minutes or hours of entertainment and education every day. The app is organized into five major sections: Home, Stuff, Shows, Quizzes and Favorites. The Home page is a mishmash of the different categories (quizzes, quotes, videos, etc.) that appear to be randomly organized. The Stuff section is organized into ten categories like Money, Culture, Tech and Adventure. Selecting any of these sub-categories will take you to a page with more sub-categories and sections from which to choose. The Shows section is organized into fourteen categories with labels like Stuff You Should Know, Stuff to Blow Your Mind and Stuff They Don't Want You to Know. Choosing any of these section will take you to a page where you can watch episodes or read articles.

The Quizzes section has a battery of quizzes for you to take and is organized by by topic (e.g. The Ultimate American Outdoorsman, The Ultimate Hiking Gear Quiz). The Favorites section keeps stores all of the content you have selected and chosen to keep around for future reference.

The app has over 40,000 articles and 12,000 videos (AirPlay equipped) so organization is critical and HowStuffWorks has done a great job of putting it all together in an easy to navigate and find ways. This is a great app to keep on your iPad whenever you're in the mood to learn a little bit about something presented in an entertaining and enjoyable format.
