1-bit Ninja by kode80

[Editor's Note: This review was written on June 23, 2011, pre-dating the launch of our News section on August 29, 2011. It is being re-published so it can be properly archived in the News section.] 1-bit Ninja by kode80 LLC is one of our favorite games of 2011 so far. This pure run and jump game with stylized 1-bit engine is packed with surprises and a unique 2D to 3D game mechanic we love. 1-bit Ninja is a transcendent game that harkens back to games of yore but packs some technological marvels of modern times to create a fascinating experience. You assume the role of a ninja in all his 1-bit glory who is after his gametoy. To get to it he must survive twenty levels through four worlds filled with enemies, murderous crevices and hidden passages. Hidden passages? Yes, hidden passages, the key to this game. You see, this game is only 2D on the surface. By touching the screen and rotating the view, you expose a beautifully rendered 3D world revealing paths only observable in this mode. If you are running and see some coins on the floor beneath you, you might say “now how the heck do I get down there?” Well, my friend, the answer is that you passed up the opportunity to travel along a path to get to those coins was only viewable in 3D mode. So although you are up against the clock to get to the end of each level, you must make time to go into 3D mode to capture all the bounty.

While trying to find hidden paths you must also dodge enemies, not fall in gaps, jump on moving platforms and collect power ups. There is so much to this game. We love it! Enemies come in all shapes and sizes. The foot soldiers are Space Invaders looking creatures that roam paths and who will kill when you come in contact with them. You can avoid them by jumping over or perform a classic head bounce to destroy them and thus collect extra points. In later levels you will come across more devious enemies including those who swirl in the air and shoot ninja stars.

Mastering the art of jumping on moving platform is essential to this game. Platforms will also take on different characteristics such as falling toward the ground when you are on top of them. Power ups are available to help you in your quest. You will come across an object, for example, that looks like a fizzling soda bottle that will not only make you run faster but also shield you against enemies temporarily.

kodo80 chose to keep the game’s controls as simple as possible, a choice we appreciate. Running is initiated by touching the lower left side of the screen and jumping by touching the lower right side. Going from 2D to 3D mode is achieved by touching and rotating the top left and right sides of the screen. There is no backward or reverse control. However, platforms moving in the opposite direction and springs will switch your ninja’s direction, a fact you need to take advantage of to get to some bounty. The level ends when you reach and touch a long pole---the closer to the top of it you touch, the more points you get.

‘1-bit Ninja’ Is A Seductive 3D Run & Jump Game AppNow that we’ve explained 1-bit Ninja’s wonderful mechanics and gameplay, we’ll explain the magic. The 1-bit graphics are faithfully rendered and the 3D images stunning. This one-two punch creates an exceptional immersive experience. The soundtrack uses a chip-tune soundtrack and dovetails nicely with the game’s 1-bit imagery.

Mix all of these together and what you’ve got is a sensational game. 1-bit Ninja is an exceptional game and one we whole-heartedly recommend. Pick it up!
