Flashlight ⊜ app review: create a variety of flashlight effects using your iPhone’s integrated flash

Introduction

If you’ve ever struggled to find your car keys in the dark or you’ve stubbed your toe walking through a dark room, this app will probably be a boon to you because along with basic flashlight functionality, it features a variety of lighting modes to help you through even the most precarious of situations.

This is one of those apps that follows such a simple premise and has such basic functionality, that what it really comes down to is a matter of whether the developer has achieved a polished and functional end product.

In the case of Flashlight ⊜, I would say that the answer is a resounding "yes." This is a great tool which is incredibly easy to use so I would definitely recommend keeping it handy because you never know when it might come in useful.

Let There Be Light!

This app has a surprisingly simplistic interface and most of the content is accessible from a single screen. There is also a big button in the center of the screen which makes it very easy to switch the light on if you need to illuminate something in a hurry.

There are three basic lighting modes in this app. The first is a basic flashlight which sends out a constant stream of light. One very cool feature enables you to adjust the brightness of the flashlight up and down by swiping the bar to the left of the power button, meaning you could even use Flashlight ⊜ as a soft night light for a little bedtime reading!

 

Flashlight, Strobe Light, and SOS Signalling

The lightning icon to the right of the power button activates the strobe light. Again, you can adjust the brightness using the same method as with the flashlight, and you can also adjust the strobe rate using the bar on the right.

Finally, the life ring at the bottom of the screen activates sends out “SOS” in Morse code by making your iPhone’s flash, well, in the appropriate pattern. I would hope never to have to use such a function but it’s definitely a good idea to keep it handy just in case.

As I mentioned in the introduction, Flashlight ⊜ is a simple app with a simple purpose, but I would like to commend the developer for pulling it off with great finesse.

It’s nice to see a simple app developed with focus and purpose, rather than being distracted by unnecessary clutter and gimmicky features.
