Insects Catalog app review: perfect for those with a love of insects

Introduction

If you have a child who absolutely loves all things insect-related, or perhaps it's you who can't get enough of them, then the Insects Catalog is a way to discover and learn about them. The app is able to give you descriptions and photos of most of the insects you'll find on Earth and is meant to be your go-to pocket guide for all things insects-related.

Encourage Learning

I like apps that encourage learning or build on someone's passion or hobby, which is why this app caught my eye in the first place.  When you launch it you may be like me and expect to see a directory of insects that you can scroll through and learn about. Well just like me, you’ll end up disappointed if that’s the case. While this app is free to download pretty much all of the content requires you to purchase the full version of the app. What little you can use and view for free certainly isn’t enough to keep you coming back for more.

The app refers to itself as the Insects Encyclopedia, which I unfortunately can't comment on since I certainly didn't get to see that in the free version. I think if you have even a passing interest in insects it's probably better to purchase the full version since it's available for only $0.99. This free version feels pointless. It is more like a commercial or ad for the actual full version of the app.

 

What You Can Do

So what exactly can you do in this app? Not a whole lot I'm afraid. When you launch the app you are given three choices which are the Quiz, the Topic of the Day, or the Dictionary List. The only one available to use in the free version is the Quiz and for the life of me I can't get it to work. I'm not sure if it's because it only has limited accessibility in the free version or what the problem is, but I certainly haven't been wowed by it. There are no instructions to walk you through it; you get nothing that tells you what the point of the quiz even is. You’re just shown a list of names and pictures. This quiz kind of sums up the whole experience I have with this free version: I don’t get it and I’m not sure what it’s accomplishing.

• The few pictures of the insects you are given are very high-quality

• None of the features are available in the free version so the app feels pointless
• The user interface is much too simple and bland

 

Final Thoughts

I think unless you’re a diehard insect enthusiast the Insects Catalog app really isn’t worth the download. If you are passionate about insects this app still isn’t worth the download unless you’re willing to purchase the full version and open all the features.
