Save Quarters & Have Fun Playing the Classics in 'Midway Arcade'

Reviews

Introduction

Warner Bros. Digital Entertainment produced this app called Midway Arcade, which includes a whole cluster of iPhone arcade games within one app.  There are both classic arcade games and classic video games within the app. You can play any one that you enjoy and scroll through all of them while sounds of lasers, guns, coins, and chatter filter through your speaker.  You can even collect tickets and redeem them at the Prize Center for items! The app opens up with a view on the entire arcade room with all of the machines, tables, and noises you expect from a real arcade.  There is even an Australian-sounding narrator who announces each game to you. Each game is presented in its real form. By that I mean the arcade games are actual arcade machines, complete with joystick and variety of buttons.  The games included are as follows: Defender, Spy Hunter, Rampage, Root Beer Tapper, Arch Rivals, Joust, Basketball, Narc, Total Carnage, APB, Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, Wizard of Wor, Pool, Air Hockey, and Roll Ball.

More Information

You can scroll though the machines with the left or right button, and in order to play one of the games you simply click 'Play'.  Additionally, if you want to view the entire table or machine, you can click and drag on the screen to rotate the table or machine.  When in front of each machine or table, the number of tickets you have received in addition to the high score are displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen. All of the games have different controls so be sure to click on the pause option after entering each game in order to adjust the controls.  For instance, Defender has the option to play with a fixed joystick, a free joystick, or tilt reverse and thrust (which relies upon tilting your iOS device).  Spy Hunter, on the other hand, has the option to tilt turn or use a wheel in addition to the fixed joystick and free joystick options. While in the main arcade room, you also have the option to click on the Settings icon in the upper right hand corner in order to display an alphabetized list of the games in the room and view the prizes you have earned. You can also enter the Leaderboards, Jukebox, Achievements, or online Store.

For the price, the app is definitely a good choice especially since you receive a multitude of games in one pack.  They are all equally fun to play and bring back the enjoyment of the 8-bit graphics from arcade games long ago.  All of the sound effects are realistic and you can get the arcade feel without ever having to enter one.  Just think of all the quarters you'll be saving by only paying $0.99 for hours of arcade plays.
