I love it when apps actually surprise me with their content. Sometimes the titles of apps can be so deceptive, that when you actually open the app, the content can really blow you off your feet. This was also the case with 2048 by Ketchapp. I really expected a game that was somehow set in a not-so-distant future, with all kinds of cool gadgets and aliens, but instead I got a really clever puzzler that uses math and gravity to test you planning skills to the maximum of their capabilities. The 2048 game app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and is available for completely free.
The gameplay of this app is pretty hard to explain. You will receive a tile numbered 2 or 4 and you will have to combine them. 2 combines with 2 to make 4, and 4 combines with 4 to make 8. This keeps doubling up. This sounds very easy, but take in account that where you will make the new tile go, the entire board will move that way too. This could mean that you block off some really important low numbers and you can’t win anymore. The trick is to always keep combining your highest numbers, but this is harder than it actually sounds. After playing the game for a few times, I actually managed to create a tile with 2048 on it, but this took a lot of trouble. I wonder if it’s possible to combine two of these as well.
The beauty of this game lies in its simplicity. Not just in terms of gameplay, but also in terms of how the app is designed. The app looks beautiful in its simplicity and you don’t even have to worry about a startup screen. There is no tutorial whatsoever, but when you start playing you will instantly get the gist of how the game is to be played. You can find a simple play by play tutorial in the option menu, but you won’t need it, I promise. There is no sound at all in the game, but you can play your own music while you play the game, and you will play it as it’s super addictive!
I’m very happy that 2048 isn’t another boring science fiction rip off game. I was so surprised when I opened this puzzler and found a deep and rich gameplay experienced packaged in a well-designed and easy-to-use wrapper. I can suggest this game to anyone who wants to try a new kind of puzzle game, but don’t expect too much, as you will get nothing more than some leaderboards and the puzzle itself. It might just be the best 2048 game for iPhone and iPad.
