12 Step AA Companion app review: the original & most comprehensive sobriety tool available for members of Alcoholics Anonymous-2020

Reviews

Introduction

If you have ever been to a 12-step program, you will know that recovery from addiction is a lifelong journey. 12 Step AA Companion is an iPhone and iPad 12 steps app designed to help you gain perspective, remind yourself of the lessons, and connect with others on the same journey.

This alcoholics anonymous app packs a lot of features including the Big Book reader, a power search tool, a unique and helpful sobriety calculator, the contacts database for AA, the ability to add notes, and much more, giving you feelings of connectedness with your goals and community.

This alcoholics app costs only $2.99 and is very easy to use even for the most technologically challenged of users. 12 steps app runs on devices with iOS 8.0 or later with support of up to iOS 13.0 and it's compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It will need 36.3 MB of free memory space on your mobile device to download and install.

Let's take a closer look at the features of this offering in our AA app review.  Also, when finished, check out our best health apps list for more options.

Big Book

The first feature of 12 Step AA Companion that I'd like to explore is the Big Book. Here you can fully customize your reading experience by adjusting the font size, navigate using a collapsible menu of index categories, use portrait or landscape mode, get full-screen view of the page, and jump between pages by typing in the page number. Top points for the user experience!

There is a built-in dictionary that comes with this app. If you don't know the meaning of a certain word, simply select it and tap “define.” There is also a very powerful search tool in the form of a magnifying glass icon, which lets you look for specific words or phrases within the Big Book text.

There are more than 60 stories from the first and second editions. As explained by the developers, they were only able to bring those two versions into this app due to copyright restrictions. It also means that this app only works for those in the United States.

If you are worried about adding notes because it might make you lose the page number, don't worry; there is a bookmark feature in the Big Book which takes you right back to where you left off.

Prayers & Promises

This app also brings you Morning Prayers, Night Prayers, Prayers From The Steps, and Prayer of St. Francis for easy referral. There is a large collection of promises within the Big Book, on subjects such as Experience, Strength, and hope.

Although you can remain totally anonymous while using this app, you can also choose to reveal your identity if you have a supportive community. You can share your favorite notes through Facebook, email, and Twitter, or highlight any text in the Big Book to copy to your clipboard and share via other communication tools.
