KingHunt - The Next Generation Slicing Game app review - slicing and dicing into a new era

Reviews

Introduction

It doesn’t happen often that a developer decides to take on a proven successful game and add so much to it that people tend to forget the previous game. Some games have tried and were such a big success that you will never hear about the old game ever again. This is also the case with the game I’m reviewing today: KingHunt - The Next Generation Slicing Game. This game by Mountain Sheep is meant to make you forget about the awesome slicing game that was Fruit Ninja HD, but will this app, designed for both iPad and iPhone, make you forget about this App Store All Star, or will it make you reminisce about the greatness that once was? We’ll find out in the next paragraphs.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to the game I referenced to in the introduction paragraph. You simply get objects thrown in front of you and you will need to slice and dice these to gain points. The more objects you slice up, the bigger your combo and the more points you will receive. This sounds easy, but of course there will be objects that will damage you when you slice them, such as small and big bombs. There is one little twist to the concept, as this time there will be enemy objects that will actually attack you if you don’t slice them in time. This will make you lose health and when you run out, the game is over. You need to slice all objects without losing your health in order to win a level.

Graphics and Sound

The biggest change compared to Fruit Ninja HD must be the graphics. The graphics are all in full HD and look stunning. The objects you’re slicing actually show where they have been hit, but regrettably can’t be hit multiple times. The sound of the game is pretty cool too, and it shows that the developer really wanted to polish these two aspects of the game until it shone. It’s fair to say that on these points KingHunt definitely outdoes its main competitor, which was released in the App Store ages ago.

Conclusion

I have to give the developers credit: they definitely did improve on the slicing game genre. The graphics are vastly improved and the sound is perfect for a game like this. The gameplay is slightly improved as well due to the addition of enemies that do damage. The only downsides are that the game gets boring quite quickly and that the objects can only be sliced once. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone and weighs in around 81 MB, which is quite large for a basic game like this. The game is available for free.
