Beyond the Apex app review

Reviews

Introduction

It doesn’t happen often that a first party-published video game gets an official app in the App Store, and it’s even rarer when this app isn’t a game but a magazine. Beyond the Apex is an app developed by Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC for both iPad and iPhone, and is basically a free magazine for all of the Gran Turismo series fans out there. It holds tons of information about the new release of Gran Turismo 6 for the PlayStation and Beyond the Apex was until now only released in Asia. The magazine is not as interactive as you might hope, though there are some extras added that were not to be found in the Asian release of this app. The app is quite large with its 332 MB, but expect a lot of quality and tons of information.

What it Offers

When Gran Turismo 6 was originally released in Japan and the rest of Asia, it was also released as a limited edition with a special booklet called Beyond the Apex. This booklet introduced all the basics of automotive engineering including the physics mechanics and tuning details in very high-quality graphics and rich visual imagery. The last part of the booklet was a basic tour guide around all the tracks that are playable in the game. This is now all available digitally in app form for people outside of Asia, but it doesn’t end here. There is also a full car database added, with details on all the cars available in Gran Turismo 6, all with beautiful visuals and a lot of in-depth information.

Search Function and Other Options

What the app makes so exciting isn’t the actual mini booklet Beyond the Apex. The meat of the app lies in the full database of playable cars in Gran Turismo 6. This part of the app has well over 1200 cars, and has so much information that you can literally spend days here learning about all the aspects of different cars. To navigate this massive database, the developer included a search function. You can also set any of the cars as favorite, meaning you can find back these cars really quickly and easily.

Conclusion

If you like cars, you owe it to yourself to get this app, even if you don’t own any gaming consoles or have never played Gran Turismo. I have never seen such an extensive app on this subject in my life and the developers really outdid themselves with the design and gathering all the information in one app. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and weighs in at just over 330 MB, which sounds a lot but is absolutely worth it!
