Introduction
There are plenty of apps available hitting the App Store which allow users to learn about, browse, and shop for engagement rings. Engagement Ring Finder is an app is available on the iPhone and iPad for free so I decided to try it out.
At first glance of the developer's page, it looks pretty swanky, as any engagement ring app should, and it looks like it has some pretty cool features. The screenshots also looked good, so I grabbed it on my iPhone 4S to test this 2.9 MB app, found in the Lifestyle section of the App Store.
Here's what I found.

First Impression
Engagement Ring Finder is, unfortunately, a pretty huge let-down. Perhaps reviewing delightful apps on a daily basis coupled with the concept that everything about engagement rings should be extravagant and exquisite, has led to ridiculously high expectations on my end, but this app truly disappointed me on many levels.
Upon launching this app, there appears to be what looks like a stock photo of a ring with the white alert screen in the foreground which says “Please wait while the catalogue is retrieved.” This alert is redundant because the background already says “Loading...” and there's a loading icon on the top right corner.
I would be remiss not to mention that the loading screen stays for far too long, and I'm already impatient because I want to look at shiny objects, not a disappointing launch screen.

Slow and Sloppy
When the app finally loads, you won't be given a ring collection right away, but rather you are taken to a sign-up form which looks rather questionable, as though it's a full-page ad. Even the wording will make you want to delete this app from your iOS device right away, much less sink a couple months' worth of salary into purchasing something significant and meaningful for the most special person in your life. The form says “Sign up here to receive more information on the great jeweler seen in this app.”
After opting out of the sign-up form, I was hoping to finally see the collection of rings as demonstrated in the screenshots. Unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in this app which prevents me from going into landscape mode. It is evident that this app was made for landscape mode because it looks terribly misshapen.
I finally tap on a ring to see the “3D image” the developers seem to be boasting about, and it turns out you have to wait another several minutes for a single image to load. You also cannot look at any other pictures or let the app run in the background while you wait. My patience ran out by this point and I exited the app.
I am also suspicious of the glowing customer reviews I see on the developer's page because that does not match my experience at all.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- There is nothing positive to say about this app
Cons
- Clunky interface which is meant for landscape mode but is locked in portrait mode
- Ridiculous wait times upon launching and then to view a single ring
- Low quality of the app does not inspire confidence to even order a roll of toilet paper, much less an engagement ring
Final Words
It is clear that Engagement Ring Finder is an app that needs a whole lot of work for it to be usable. I generally try to look for the silver lining and focus on the positive notes of an app, but I'm sad to say that this app has none.
