StereoExplorer app review: isolate instrumental tracks

Reviews

Introduction

StereoExplorer is a very interesting app for iPhone and iPad that enables you to isolate the individual instrumental and vocal tracks of your favorite songs to hear them in their own right or view them as complex waveforms.

The best iPhone apps for listening to music

I’ve seen various apps in the Music category of the App Store offering similar features before but this is almost certainly one of the best developments of its kind, providing high-quality tracking in a simple format that anyone should be able to use.

Isolate or Remove Tracks from Music

What we’ve got here is a fairly straightforward yet wonderfully implemented app for  listening to music that allows you to isolate instruments or vocal tracks on your favorite songs without any kind of prior musical engineering experience.

Best iphone and ipad apps

With this app you can either isolate individual tracks to solo them or you can remove instruments; the former is ideal for singers and musicians such as guitarists who want to jam along to a song by removing the lead track.

Some Songs Work Better than Others

StereoExplorer also allows you to view a graphical representation of instrumentation to more thoroughly understand the dynamics, and integration with the music in your iTunes Music Library saves you from having to wait for individual tracks to be imported into the app.

I’m impressed by this app on all fronts, and although some songs aren’t going to be very well suited to extrapolation or ‘soloing’ of individual tracks, this app performs very well indeed.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Isolate instruments or vocal tracks on your favorite songs with ease
  • Also allows you to remove instruments rather than isolating a single track
  • Integrates with the music in your iTunes Music Library to save time
  • See a graphical representation of instrumentation to more thoroughly understand the dynamics

Cons

  • While not necessarily a con, it should be noted that the results produced with this app will depend heavily on the initial song mix you are working with; the app does its job very well but some tracks will produce better results than others

Final Words

StereoExplorer for iPhone and iPad looks great and definitely delivers the goods, earning it a solid recommendation from me.
