Raccoon 2013 app review: relive the '80s

Reviews

Introduction

If you’re a fan of retro '80s video games then you’ll definitely like this title. Remember Donkey Kong? Well Raccoon 2013 has a lot in common with that classic from the early '80s. The graphics are about as basic as you can imagine, but they’re meant to be. If you don’t get the whole retro thing then don’t download this app, but for the rest of us it’s a real blast from the past! This app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Raccoon Fever

You probably have to be 35 plus to remember the 1980s first-hand but that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate those simpler times. Remember this was an era before cell phones and before the Internet, so any type of video game was considered a major breakthrough. It was all so new. This is the type of mindset you should be in before downloading this app. Yes the graphics and game play are simple, but they’re supposed to be. It’s not the hardest game you’ll ever play, but it does have its challenges. I can’t seem to get past those darn centipedes!

The best arcade games for the iPhone

As you would expect from such a basic video game this app takes up minimal space on your device; it’s only 3.2 MB and it’s available for free. It’s not hard to figure out as the gameplay is very basic. The app does not provide any instructions, and you don’t really need any.  All you have to do is open the app and get started.

Retro Game Play

The game’s opening screen is very simple. There are three options to choose from: more games, level select, and options. More games will simply take you back to the app store to download the games sponsored app. The options tab will allow you turn the sound on or off, and to hide the controls if you like: I recommend leaving the controls visible. To play the actual game you will need to choose level select. On the next screen you can choose to start on level 1, 2, 3, or 4, but you can only access subsequent levels once you’ve completed the one before it.

Once you selected a level you can start your game. In the game your character is a little raccoon that you have to navigate to the top of the level. In order to progress you’ll have to climb the ladders, collect carrots, and avoid the snakes and centipedes... oh, and don’t forget the spikes! Gameplay is easy. Simply tap on the appropriate direction arrow to control the raccoon’s movements, and use the spring when you need to jump over an object. Once you’ve climbed the ladder that leads to the top platform the level is complete, and you can then unlock the next level, which is easier said than done. The game may be retro '80s, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to play!

Final Words

Racoon 2013 really is a true retro '80s style video game. If you’re someone who doesn’t think anything older than 10 years is worth bothering with, you should not download this app! If you do enjoy a little retro action this game is a lot of fun.
