Ancient Story-Teller

Fables Part3 (with search) is a great collection of fables that have been credited to Aesop. It has a search function to find stories with specific character traits, by story title, or by theme. Aesop’s stories use anthropomorphic animals, which means that they are animals with human-like traits. Bunnies doing laundry, cats dancing, and dogs walking on two legs are just some of the examples. These fables remain a popular choice for moral teachings today such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Ant and the Grasshopper, the North Wind and the Sun, The Tortoise and the Hare, and The Fox and the Grapes are some examples that you may remember from your own childhood.

Short and Sweet

Fables Part3 (with search) is full of short and sweet stories. When you’re telling a story to a young child, or around a campfire, hearth, or in a public square, you want to get the message across quickly and concisely. Aesop was a master of this art, and his stories are usually quite short. I appreciate this so that I can tell a story with a good message to my kids without having to read for an hour at bedtime. I love to read to my kids, but it is exhausting to read for a full hour when I have been up all day and honestly, I often read myself to sleep when it’s a long chapter in our current book.

The app itself is easy to use. Tap the story you’d like and read the story using one of the 12 text sizes that works best for you. On the default size, many of the stories are on one screen. If it’s too small to read at night without your glasses, or if you want to get more on the screen, then adjust the size. If you prefer to read your text on landscape, then the menu will hide and give you more reading space on the screen.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Scroll down seeing a picture suggesting the story characters
  • Short and sweet for bedtime or just hanging out around the campfire

Cons

  • Three separate apps to include all of the stories, but this does mean it’s more through in the scope of text

Final Thoughts

Fables Part3 (with search) is an iPhone and iPad app that allows the user to search the database of available stories included in this particular part. I enjoyed checking out the stories that are included in the app, and I also like that the page isn’t bogged down with graphics. Interactive stories with illustrations do have their place, but sometimes it’s just nice to hold my phone on my own and read to my kids without them begging to take my phone away from me.
