Weather: Universal Forecast app review: find your travel forecast

Reviews

Introduction

Most of us are obsessed with the weather, which is understandable considering how much of an influence the weather can have on our daily activities. A lot of developers have recognized our interest with the weather and tried to take advantage of it by creating apps to help us keep track of the weather in our home town or in any other place we might be interested in. Weather: Universal Forecast is a simple and unique app that does a pretty credible job of providing accurate weather forecasts.  This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and the iPod touch.

Forecasting the Weather

Weather apps are quite common in the App Store: some are quite elaborate while others prefer to keep it simple. Weather: Universal Forecast probably falls somewhere in the middle. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the more advanced apps, things like satellite radar and the like, but it does have some pretty cool features that you probably won’t find elsewhere.

For the most part the app worked pretty well for me, but I did run into a couple of glitches. When I first booted up the app I got the standard question of whether or not I would allow the app to access my current location, when I answered this in the affirmative I received an error message. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it but ran into the same problem. The other thing that I didn’t like about this app was the lack of instructions. You simply have to figure out how it works yourself. You’ll only need 3.4 MB of free space on your iOS device for this one.

How it Works

When you open the app for the first time you’ll see nothing but a blank screen and a circular tab with a plus sign in the center of it. If you tap on this symbol you can add a city of your choice in which you’d like to keep track of the weather. For each city you add the app provides: the sky conditions, the temperature, the relative humidity, and the barometric pressure. If you tap on the city you can also access information for the local wind speed, as well as the predicted forecast for the next nine days.

A really cool feature of this app is that it allows you to view a current weather forecast for up to three different cities at any one time by taking advantage of a split screen feature. If you swipe left you can continue to add even more cities. It’s a great way to keep track of the weather in multiple locations. This is really useful if you do a lot of travel for business or if you just want to follow the weather forecast in some of your favorite places.  Other features include the ability to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius for tracking temperature, and the ability to share a forecast over social media.
