The institutions we grew up with often fill us with a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time in our lives. Super Mario may be just a character in a video game but he still invokes fond memories of spending Sunday afternoons with our best friend or favorite cousin. Waldo conjures up the same sort of memories. The Waldo & Friends app has the classic look and feel of the Waldo books we grew up with and now we can share our love of Waldo with our own kids. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
If you had any of the Where’s Waldo books as a kid this app will be pretty familiar to you. The idea is the same: you have to find Waldo in the middle of a busy backdrop. In a Waldo game there’s so much going on in each picture it’s hard to focus your mind on what you’re really looking for and that’s the whole point. It will challenge your mind and you’ll have a little fun along the way.
This game is a lot of fun but I did run into a couple of issues. The game progression can be a little slow at times. When you’re waiting for the next level to start you have to wait for the game to run its course; you can’t just skip ahead. This is definitely a little frustrating. The app also has a tendency to crash after levels on occasion which isn’t a good thing when you’re on a roll. This app will require 120 MB of free space on your iOS device.
How to Play
If you had any Where’s Waldo books as a kid it won’t take long to figure out the app. It’s based on the same idea. When you first run the app you’ll start with a test level in which the location of the objects you’re looking for are revealed to you after a few seconds. The idea is to let you get the feel of how the game works before you start playing for real. Generally each level gives you three or four objects to find, when you discover them simply tap on them and the app will indicate if you’ve been successful. The game is on a timer so you won’t want to linger too long. If you just can’t find the item you’re looking for you can tap on the bone in the bottom right corner to reveal the location of the next item. This kind of feels like cheating to me, but I guess it’s helpful for the little ones.
What I really liked about this app was the little details. The background music is pretty cool and so are the sound effects. Whenever you find an item the app lights up with stars that are accompanied by some cool chimes; it’s the little details that really make this app entertaining. It has all the familiar features that you’d expect from Where’s Waldo and a whole lot more.
Captures the look and feel of the original Where’s Waldo books
Cool music and visual effects
Clues are available if you become stuck
You can’t skip ahead when you’re waiting between levels
The app crashes on occasion between levels
We all love things that remind us of the fun times in our childhood. For a lot of us Where’s Waldo is an institution that triggers instant memories of happier times. The Waldo & Friends app does a great job of recreating the experience we remember and it has some cool new effects as well.
