The Word of the Day app review: impress people with your vocabulary

Reviews

Introduction

It’s always nice to impress people at a social gathering with your extensive vocabulary and it’s fun as well. When we attended school as children, part of the basic curriculum included exposure to new words every single week, but when we get older it’s unusual for us to learn new words. There’s no reason we can’t continue to expand our vocabulary no matter what our age and The Word of the Day is a great little app to help us to continue expanding our vocabulary. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The App Store is a great resource for finding apps that can help to relieve boredom and it doesn’t always have to be games; there are lots of other categories of apps to keep you entertained. What makes an app successful is if it can capture a need we didn’t really know we had. The Word of the Day app is exactly this type of app and it can be a lot of fun impressing people with your expanding vocabulary.

My main criticism of this app is that it really is just the word of the day. There’s no archive and you can’t access words from previous days before you started using the app; essentially it’s as if the app didn’t exist before you started using it, which obviously isn’t the case. There are also in the app in the form of banner ads at the bottom of the page but they don’t really interfere with the app's use. This app will require 6.2 MB of free space on your iOS device.

How it Works

There really isn’t much to this app as it has a very simple user interface. When you open the app the first thing you’re going to see is your word of the day displayed prominently at the top of the page with the date below it. After that there is a description of what type of word it is (noun, adjective, etc) and then the definition of the word itself. The text is white on a dark background, making it easy to read and the font is nice and large as well.

There is no archive of words from before you started using the app but it does contain an archive of words for each day after you’ve installed the app. To access this archive you simply swipe from right to left. This is helpful if you’re having trouble remembering the exact definition of a word that really interested you. You can also set a reminder to send you a notification each day with your word of the day. Other than that the only other feature within the app is the ability to share your word of the day on social media.

Final Words

The Word of the Day is fun little app that can help you expand your vocabulary and impress people at a party as well. Don’t worry if you forget a word from a previous day because the app will keep an archive for you. This app won’t keep you occupied for hours but it’s a fun one to check out once a day.
