The Cat in the Hat and All His Friends

We should always encourage our children to pick up a book and read, but there’s no reason that books can’t be just as much fun and beneficial in digital form on a tablet.

The best iPad apps for book lovers

The important thing is to encourage our kids to read, and very few books have more success at convincing kids that reading is a good thing than the Dr. Seuss series. The Dr. Seuss Treasury app makes the books even more fun with interactive options, including fun narration and sound effects.

This app is a whole lot of fun with very few flaws. The only drawback is that the free portion of the app is limited to a book of the month which changes each month.

If you don’t want to pay for a monthly subscription or purchase all the books for $99.99 then you’ll be limited to whatever book is selected as the book of the month. A monthly subscription will set you back $4.99 per month. If you are happy to pay for full access there are over 50 titles to choose from.

There are also the occasional ads which pop up, but these are pretty infrequent. This app will require 93.6 MB of free space on your iOS device.

The app is laid out in an appealing form, and of course the Cat in the Hat is there to greet you every time you access the main menu, which also features a fun window with all the available titles listed. To view everything that’s available you simply scroll down till you find a title you like.

There is a 7-day free trial to let you try out the app with full access so you can decide if it’s something worth purchasing.

To open a book you simply tap on the book cover which will open up a preview page with three different reading options. The first option is to have the book read to you by a narrator. In this version you still have to flip the pages yourself by swiping right to left but the pages are read to you.

The narrator does a great job of bringing the pages to life. If you prefer you can choose to read the book yourself without a narrator or you can run it on auto play and the narrator will read the pages to you and the app will flip the pages automatically.

It works very well in any format and it recreates the original books in every detail.  For parents you can also access statistics on how much reading your child is doing which is a nice feature. There’s also a built-in search function if you’re looking for a specific title.
