The Wonderful Adventures of Nils is an interactive book created for the iPad for your child’s enjoyment. The classic story is told through an illustrated audio book with interactive animation. Neil is a very naughty boy who likes to hurt small animals. The HuXian try to teach him a lesson and make him thumb size though, and in order to escape the animals’ chasing him for revenge he has to climb onto a goose’s body.

The moral of the story is that you should help people who need help. It is a lovely story to read at night to your kids, and I love downloading free books for my iPad to read to my kids. This app, like many others, does not highlight the text as the story is read to the child. If they can follow along then they can run their finger under the words, but often kids are still decoding the words when the page has already been read.

Mystery Makes it Fun

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils has enough mystery to keep you reading, and also keep your kids interested. I liked that the boy was able to be home alone to cause his mischief, as it explained how the child was able to get into trouble without his parents challenging his behaviors. It also explained why they didn’t stop him when he was wandering away and then turned into a thumb-sized person by the HuXian.

The best iPad apps for Preschool (Pre-K)

The story is set in Sweden, and the characters are illustrated to look the part. I also like that Nils is pictured as upset for a good part of the story. It shows that he is immediately remorseful, and that he did learn his lesson.

Something that was very annoying, however, was that the ads in the app kept popping up over the text of the story. It makes it hard to read when you can’t even see the story!

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils - bedtime fairy tale iBigToy-child is an iPad book that will have you reading with your kids and interested in what’s happening next. The only thing that distracted me from wanting to turn the page was when the ads would pop up over the text so that I couldn’t read it. It was extremely frustrating, but I did like the story with a good moral that was told.
