Calendar Planner app review: organize your life with ease

Reviews

Introduction

There is no shortage of apps for managing time and keeping track of daily tasks. The one that comes with your iOS device does a pretty good job itself, so for an app in this category to be worthwhile it has to at least outshine the preloaded calendar app. Apps in this category often get a little too complicated in attempt to be all things for all people. Calendar Planner is a simple little app that strikes a good balance between functionality and ease of use. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Get Organized

Calendar Planner is one of the better efforts you’ll come across in the productivity section of the App Store. It combines good functionality with an ease of use which is not as common as you might think in this category. There are a lot of features that you’ll find in any calendar or time management app and it’s laid out in an easy-to-follow format which is quite refreshing. Contrary to what a lot of developers seem to think, more is not always better.

One thing I really liked about this app is the fact that it works in both landscape and portrait view. A lot of developers seem to build apps that will only work in portrait view, which is fine if you’re only using them on an iPhone, but if you want to view an app on an iPad it often looks better in landscape view. The other thing I really liked about this one is the functional layout: there’s only one simple menu along the bottom which makes it easy to switch between different modes with a single tap. If you’re not sure how something works there’s also a great user manual included in the app. There is one serious flaw though: sometimes when you add an item to your To-Do list it will disappear once you exit the app. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it shouldn’t happen at all. The Calendar Planner app will require 15.1 Mb of available space on your iOS device.

How it Works

When you open the Calendar Planner app you’ll be greeted by a typical calendar view that’s quite common in scheduling apps. It defaults to a monthly view but you can quickly switch to a daily view if you prefer by tapping on this option in the menu at the bottom of the app. On this menu you’ll also a Goals icon, a To-Do icon, a View icon, and a Settings icon. The Goals feature is only available through in-app purchase at a cost of $6.99. The To-Do feature is where you can add items to your daily schedule for reminders and the View feature allows you to control whether you want holidays and birthdays to appear on your calendar or not. Generally calendar apps include these items by default, so it’s kind of nice to be able to control if they’re included or not.

Inside the Settings feature you’ll find some more tools to control how information is displayed in the app and you’ll also find links for sharing the app or leaving feedback with the developer. This is also where you’ll find the apps user manual which includes a pretty good overview of how everything works. Other than the puzzling tendency to lose To-Do items you’ve added on occasion there isn’t a whole lot wrong with this app, but that is of course a serious concern.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Simple layout
  • Includes a Goals functions and the ability to add To-Do items
  • One simple menu allows you to easily switch between daily view and monthly view

Cons

  • The Goals feature is only available through in-app purchase
  • Does not always save To-Do items after exiting the app

Final Words

Calendar Planner has the potential to be a great time management and calendar app. It’s easy to use with a great layout and it includes a great set of instructions. It’s got everything you’d want in this type of app. Unfortunately it has the annoying habit of losing To-Do items you’ve saved to your calendar on occasion, which is a serious problem in a time management app. If the developers can fix this flaw this app would definitely be the go-to scheduling app for a lot of iOS users.
