We are all obsessed with the passage of time – it’s part of every decision we make in our daily lives. It doesn’t matter whether you’re waiting for the clock to tick down at the end of the work day, fussing over dinner so that you can get the kids to soccer practice in time, or waiting for your favorite show to start, time will play some kind of roll in your thought process. iOS devices do have a built in clock and this is always displayed at the top of the device, but it’s quite small and not always easy to see. Time Buddy offers an alternative way to keep track of time by placing a larger clock within your notification center that’s much easier to see. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
There are countless time keeping apps in the app store with just about every type of interface you can imagine and with varying degrees of functionality. Some are just plain old clocks, some are digital rather than analog, some adjust automatically to your time zone, and some even offer elaborate alarm clocks. Time Buddy is a fairly ordinary clock when compared with some of the clocks available in the App Store – it doesn’t offer any kind of alarm clock functionality at all.
The lack of an alarm clock function is really puzzling in this app – it’s pretty much become a standard expectation for any kind of clock app. Yes it is free, but so are many other apps that have built in alarm clocks so this doesn’t really explain the omission. The other strange thing about this one is that every city in North America is designated as part of the USA – I think the residents of Toronto, Canada and Mexico City, Mexico would be surprised to find out their cities are part of the USA. It’s hard to give an app a lot of consideration when it misses such basic details. This app will require 2.7 MB of available space on your IOS device.
How it Works
The main attraction for this app is that it can be set to function as a widget in your notification center. You simply swipe down from the top of your device to open the notification center, tap on today, then tap on edit, and then tap on the green + sign next to the Time Buddy widget. After that you’ll be able to see the apps clock displayed in three different colors – although it’s not really clear why you need three different colored versions of the same clock.
If you open the app itself to display the clock you’ll notice it defaults to your current time zone. If you want to change the time zone simply swipe down near the top of the screen. The app only allows you to view one time zone at a time. Other than that you can switch between digital or analog clocks by swiping left or right, but that’s about all there is to it. Curiously the digital view displays the time three times in three different colors – again, I’m not really sure what the purpose of this is.
Allows you to place a clock in your notification center as a widget
Colorful clock display
No alarm clock function
All North American cities displayed as part of the USA
Only displays one time zone at a time
If you’re looking for a clock app that will work in your notification center then you may want to give Time Buddy a try but that’s about all it really has going for it. This app does not include a built in alarm clock and it strangely enough doesn’t match up cities correctly with their country of origin. There are certainly better clock options to be found in the App Store.
