Machweo app review: fun twist on and endless runner

Reviews

Introduction

With all the competitions in the endless runner games category of the App Store it’s not easy for developers to come up with something new that hasn’t already been done before. In these types of games you’re normally tasked to jump over or slide under objects as your character continuously moves forward. The look and feel of the games may differ but there overall strategy does not. That’s where Machweo is a little bit different – it is an endless runner but you don’t jump or slide to avoid obstacles you draw the landscape to change Machweo’s path. It’s really quite unique. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Unique Game Play

What makes a game great is a combination of fun graphics and unique and challenging game play. Machweo is set in an African themed backdrop with a familiar style of African music in the background. There’s something about the steady drum beat that really adds to the feel of this game. To add to the African feel some of the obstacles in your way or African style masks and totems – this one really is a lot of fun.

There aren’t too many drawbacks in this one, although you will have to put up with ads in the free version. You can remove the ads through an in-app purchase of $0.99 if you like but they don’t really interfere with game play. The other issue I ran into from time to time appears to be a bit of a glitch. Sometimes when you draw a path Machweo runs right through it instead of going over it. This could have something to do with the timing of your drawing but this isn’t really clear and there’s nothing in the developers App Store description that suggests this is the case. This app will require 69.3 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How to Play

When you start the game Machweo will begin running across an African themed landscape from left to right across the screen. As you progress through the game obstacles will appear in your way and you can either choose to let Machweo continue running underneath them if you don’t think he’s likely to run into them, or you can draw him a path over the obstacle. To draw a path you simply place your finger on the screen and move it up and over the obstacle. The pace is pretty quick so you’ll need to keep your wits about you because obstacles can appear out of nowhere. You’ll also want to make sure you start your path near the ground otherwise Machweo might have trouble navigating over it. It’s fun and addictive and a completely unique take on the endless runner concept.

Another plus for this game is that it includes Game Center integration so you can see how your best score compares against other players. There isn’t much else to this one. There’s the standard button for rating the game in the App Store and a link to purchase the removal of ads from the game and that’s about it. The developer has kept things nice and simple.

Final Words

Machweo is a fun new twist on the traditional endless runner style of game. In this one you don’t jump and slide to avoid obstacles you draw yourself a path that will take you over them. It makes for a very addictive little game that you’ll have trouble walking away from.
