PicPop Inc. app review: short and fun music videos

Reviews

Introduction

The great thing about the social media phenomenon that has swept the globe over the last 10 years is that just when you think everything’s been tried before something new comes along to surprise you. We’re all familiar with the popular sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but there’s also a whole host of lesser known social media apps. Some of these are quite innovative, offering something entirely new for public consumption. The PicPop Inc. app tries to fit into this latter category.  It’s a new way of sharing short videos with other users of the platform. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Video Sharing

Each social media application has its own niche in the market: Twitter has gained popularity for its short comments with links to more information if you want to explore a topic further, Instagram is the social media of choice for sharing great pictures, and Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family and share all kinds of great content. There isn’t a lot these major players don’t offer which makes it difficult for newcomers to establish themselves and while PicPop Inc. bills itself as a great way to publish your own video creations it doesn’t really do anything that hasn’t been done before.

The PicPop Inc. app does boast a nice clean user interface and it’s definitely easy to use but it has too many shortcomings to have much success in a highly competitive category. The most glaring problem with this app is that the videos are limited to 15 seconds; you can expand them to 90 seconds with an in-app purchase. The problem is you can share videos on other social media apps such as Facebook without these time limitations. Facebook may not have been developed exclusively as a social media video sharing platform but it does just fine. The PicPop Inc. app will require 12.1 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How it Works

When you open the app the first thing you’ll need to do is create your user profile which includes your basic personal information as well as the requirement to create a user name. Once you’ve got passed this obligatory step you can get started using the app. To navigate among different functions there’s a menu on the bottom which includes access to the video editing tools, a chat function for connecting with other users, a news function to see what other users are up to, and an explore section where you can go to find other users to follow and to view their video creations.

The explore function is a pretty cool feature of this app. When you swipe up on the screen you’ll scroll through different users and their most recent video will play automatically as you transition to their profile; it’s quite seamless. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the fun and creative videos other users have created with this app, but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be that many users using the platform just yet. As scrolled down I found I was continuously viewing videos by the same few users.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • User-friendly interface
  • Explore function has cool video transition effects

Cons

  • Not enough users on the system yet
  • Videos are limited to 15 seconds in the free version

Final Words

PicPop Inc. is a decent new social media platform for sharing your cool video creations. It has some powerful features that allow you to create and share some professional looking videos, but unfortunately the videos are simply too short. It’s tough to take a social media platform too seriously when other platforms allow you to create videos without such time limitations.
