Fieryland app review: a role playing game set in the middle ages

Reviews

Introduction

Fieryland by Yan Huang is a fantasy roll playing game set in the European middle ages. In this version of the Middle Ages though there are monsters and magic to contend with. As you fight your way across a challenging landscape you will be directed to complete more and more difficult tasks. There’s a lot going on in this game so it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be defeating just about every monster in your path. The RPG category of the App Store is a pretty crowded place so a developer has to come up with something pretty special to stand out, but unfortunately Fieryland never quite gets there. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

There are tons of different RPG’s available for download from the App Store and they can vary greatly in their level of playability. There are a couple of things every good RPG should include: they should have stunning graphics, attention to detail, and allow for strong interaction between the player and the game. Fieryland is a great looking game with fantastic graphics and timely sound effects, but it just doesn’t compare to some of the best RPG’s available from the App Store.

The biggest problem with Fieryland is that it just doesn’t allow the player a lot of control over the outcome of quests and battles. All of the battles are simulated as are your movements anywhere around the fort – you can control your approach but not the outcome. The only real control you have is with how you interact with other players and your decision making when it comes to purchasing weapons or potions – how you decide might very well determine the outcome of a battle.

There’s also no real introduction or comprehensive set of instructions. Quests are introduced and explained to you as you go, but there’s nothing to explain how you can develop your character through better weapons and potions – you just have to figure this out by yourself. It also takes quite a while to load up the app when you open it up, and from time to time you lose connection with the game server. This app will require 153 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How to Play

When you start the game you’ll be asked to choose what type of character you want to be – mage, warrior, or assassin. Each different character has their own unique set of strengths and you can improve upon these as you complete quests successfully. When you complete a quest you will receive rewards and payment in diamonds for purchasing better weapons. You can also use these to help you recharge after a grueling battle, and you can purchase diamonds through in-app purchase rather than waiting to receive them as a reward if you like.

A good feature of this game is its strong social interaction capabilities – you can easily interact with other players around the world and trade secrets and ideas. With everything that’s going on in this immersive game, interacting with others is a great way to learn some tips and tricks as you go. Most people you’ll run into are pretty helpful.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent graphics and sound effects
  • Your character improves as you complete quests successfully
  • Allows for strong social interaction with other users

Cons

  • Takes a while to load
  • Frequently lose connection to the game server
  • Only limited control over your characters actions

Final Words

Fieryland is a decent effort in the RPG category – it’s just not a great one. The graphics and sound effects are excellent, but it does fall a little short when it comes to your ability to control the game. You do control the direction your character moves, you just don’t control their actions once they arrive at their destination. With a few improvements, Fieryland has the potential to be an extremely great game.
