It can be difficult finding apps that are appropriate for young children with any real educational value, but jigsaw puzzles are a great way for young children to begin to understand how things can fit together to form a whole. Toonia Puzzle by 3fs is a simple jigsaw puzzle app that’s suitable for children as young as two, but it can still pose a challenge to older children as well. Toonia Puzzle is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Jigsaw Puzzles for All Ages

The App Store is full of jigsaw puzzle apps for both children and adults. With all the variety available, the iOS user has a lot of choices available. So, developers have to do a good job to make their app stand out in the crowd. The puzzles have to be difficult enough to pose a challenge to the child, but not so difficult that they become bored and frustrated and give up. They should also feature fun pictures that kids enjoy such as cartoon characters and fun nature scenes. Toonia features puzzles that are kind of abstract which my five year old just didn’t seem to appreciate.

Perhaps the biggest issue with this app is that the free version only comes with one unlocked puzzle which isn’t much of a sample to decide if you’re kids are going to like it. The rest of the puzzles are only available through in-app purchase and there are only five in total anyway so even if you’re willing to purchase them there isn’t really much to choose from. Toonia Puzzle app will require 64.7 MB of available space on your iOS device.

The Essentials

The user interface of this app is nice and simple as you’d like it to be for a kid’s app – you just open the app swipe through the available puzzles, tap on the one that your child wants to work on, and they can begin completing their puzzle. The puzzle piece can be slid into place by tapping and holding them with your finger and moving them to the desired location. To complete the first piece there will be a greyed area on the screen that guides your child where to place the first piece. This is a nice feature for young children that makes it easy for them to get started.

The really odd part about the puzzles in this app is that they aren’t contained on one screen. Once your child has completed the puzzle pieces on the first page they will have to swipe to the right or left to keep going. This isn’t what you’d call kid friendly. Children normally have difficulty picturing something that isn’t right in front of them and this just seems like a bad idea for a children’s app.

Toonia is a jigsaw puzzle app for kids that’s easy to use, but unfortunately doesn’t provide your kids a lot of choice. There are only five puzzles in total and only one of them are included in the free version of the app.
