PathAway Pro by Muskoka Tech Inc. is a comprehensive mobile navigation and tracking app for the outdoor enthusiast. If you love being outdoors whether it’s hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling, or one of countless other activities that fit the active lifestyle, it pays to be prepared. With PathAway Pro you can easily track your route so that you can recover your steps, set markers at your favorite stops along the way so that you can return to them later, and save all of this information for your next trip along your favorite trail. There are endless possibilities that this app can be used for no matter what your activity level. The app is available for purchase from the App Store at a cost of $49.99 and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
The App Store is full of GPS navigation apps for just about any purpose, but most of them are either very basic or way too complicated for the average person to bother with. PathAway Pro is an app that will appeal to a wide range of iOS device users because of its versatility, ease of use, and abundance of tools. With this app, you don’t have to be a professional navigator or tracker to get the hang of things, all you need is enthusiasm for outdoor activities and a little bit of tech savvy and you’re off and running.
There are a lot of tools in this app which may seem a little daunting at first, but the developers don’t just throw you to the wolves expecting you to figure everything out for yourself. Every time you open the app by default you begin at a start page that includes an extensive user manual that tells you all you need to know about the app, and you can sign up for their newsletter as well which will keep you informed of any updates and new features. Best of all the user interface is clean and simple, and all icons are easily recognizable for what they are. This app will require 8.7 MB of available space on your iOS device.
Depending on whether you are using the app on an iPad or an iPhone there are some subtle differences that have more to do with the size of the screen than anything else. On both platforms the main screen will feature a map that uses GPS technology to pinpoint your location, but on the iPad to the right of the map is an extra menu featuring a compass, information on elevation, speed, trip distance, and time elapsed – these features are all accessible on the iPhone as well but they are not visibly displayed all the time.
Navigating your way around the app is pretty simple. At the top left of the main window are your navigation buttons. Here you can access the main menu, toggle GPS on/off, start tracking your path, add points along your route, access existing routes, turn alarms on or off, and add pictures to accompany points along your route. If you’re not sure how to use any of these, you can always refer back to the user menu by tapping on help on the main menu. Perhaps one of the coolest features of this app is the BackTrack feature – when you turn on this feature you can use it to retrace your steps back to the starting point of a long trip so you don’t have to worry about getting lost in the wilderness!
Comprehensive user manual is included and easily accessible
Allows you to easily create routes and save them
Can add favorite points along your route with reference pictures
Includes a BackTrack feature for retracing your steps on a trail
