Kukaball app review: a simple soccer style game

Reviews

Introduction

Kukaball by Arda Alpman is a simple little game with a soccer theme. This is the type of game that you can learn to play in a couple of seconds, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Scoring goals in Kukaball is definitely a challenge, so if you don’t like being frustrated, this game is probably not for you. On the flip side, if you’re the type of person that doesn’t know how to give up on anything no matter how difficult, you may find yourself playing this one into the wee hours of the morning. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Score and Score Often

Kukaball is sort of a cross between an air hockey style game and the classic game of Pong – although it’s billed as a soccer game. How does it stand up against other similar style of games? The graphics are pretty ordinary and the game play is very simplistic. There’s not option to play more than one player, and there’s no leaderboard of any kind. On top of all that the sound effects are somewhat bland as well. This just isn’t the type of game that you’re likely to get addicted to.

It does include a simple instruction intro which basically just tells you to score as many goals as possible, but the problem is that scoring goals is frustratingly difficult. A good game should be challenging but solvable – Kukaball just isn’t responsive enough for you to develop a game plan for scoring lots of goals. If you do score a goal it’s more likely to be by blind luck than any sort of skill on your part. What may be even more frustrating is that there are no different levels or game play options – it’s just the same game, every time, over and over again. This app will require 2.8 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How to Play

The objective is very simple in Kukaball, score as many goals as you can in 45 seconds. The problem is that’s not likely to be very many. The first few times I played this game I scored a grand total of 1 goal, most of my games ended with zero’s on the board. The idea is that you swipe your finger to move the virtual soccer ball across the screen towards the goal in the hopes that you can beat the goalie. The goalie is actually what looks like a traffic cone, which is kind of cute but not enough to make this one a winner. You can use the walls to try and rebound the ball into the net, but for the most part it doesn’t make much difference – scoring goals is extremely difficult no matter how you approach it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • If you enjoy a challenge this game will provide it

Cons

  • Game’s difficulty level is frustratingly hard
  • Graphics and sound effects are ordinary
  • Only one level and no leaderboard

Final Words

If you’re looking for a simple game and you enjoy soccer Kukaball may interest you, but its extreme difficulty level makes it more than a little frustrating. If you want to keep the user interested you have to make a game challenging, but solvable. For most, this game is not solvable.
